What is a Profit Margin?
In plain terms, your profit margin is the portion of every Naira your customer pays you that actually remains as profit after all direct expenses are settled.
For example, if you sell an item for ₦25,000, but you spent ₦14,000 to buy it from your supplier, ₦2,000 on packaging and dispatch waybill, and ₦375 on payment gateway charges, your total direct cost is ₦16,375.
Your actual gross profit is ₦8,625 per unit. That gives you a gross profit margin of 34.5% (₦8,625 ÷ ₦25,000 × 100). That 34.5% is the money that actually sustains your business, pays your rent, finances salaries, and covers emergency restocking.
Why Sales Turnover Can Lie to You
It is very easy to make ₦5 million in gross sales in Nigeria and still end up broke at the end of the month. When business owners focus only on top-line revenue without watching unit margins, hidden expenses bleed them dry:
- Delivery Dispatch & Waybill Cancellations: If a dispatch rider goes to deliver an order and the customer fails to pick up or cancels on delivery, you absorb two-way transit fees out of your own pocket.
- Payment Gateway & Banking Deductions: Transaction fees (such as Paystack, Flutterwave, or bank transfer switches) take 1.5% or more off every transaction before it lands in your account.
- Foreign Exchange Replacement Costs: Selling imported inventory at old pricing when replacing the same stock tomorrow will cost 25% more due to currency shifts creates a phantom profit trap.
- Customer Acquisition Ad Spend (CAC): If you spend ₦4,000 on Instagram and TikTok ads to make a sale that only nets you ₦3,000 in gross margin, you are actively paying money to lose customers.
Gross Margin vs. Markup: Understanding the Difference
One of the most expensive mistakes Nigerian retailers make is treating markup as profit margin. While both measure profit, they divide by completely different numbers:
Gross Profit Margin: The percentage of the selling price that is pure profit.
Gross Margin = (Selling Price - Total Cost) ÷ Selling Price × 100
Markup: The percentage added onto your cost price to set the selling price.
Markup = (Selling Price - Total Cost) ÷ Total Cost × 100
If you buy a product for ₦10,000 and sell it for ₦15,000, your markup is 50% (₦5,000 ÷ ₦10,000). But your gross margin is only 33.3% (₦5,000 ÷ ₦15,000). If you run a "40% off clearance sale" thinking you have a 50% buffer, you will sell at a net cash loss on every single item.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered a "good" profit margin in Nigeria?
For physical retail and e-commerce in Nigeria, a healthy gross profit margin typically ranges between 25% and 45%. A margin below 15% leaves very little room to survive waybill delivery delays, customer returns, or sudden currency changes.
